Ton Joosten’s website
Welcome to my website! Let me introduce myself. I am Ton Joosten. I was born in 1959 and grew up in the Netherlands. In 1986 I visited the Pyrenees for the first time and since then I returned each year to these magical mountains. Gradually I became under the spell of the Pyrenean mountains and in 1992 I decided to start writing about the Pyrenees. It took a few years to complete the first book, a comprehensive guide with 26 multiday routes in the high mountains of the Pyrenees. The title: Under the spell of the Pyrenees (In de ban van de Pyreneeën). It has become a guide for adventurous walkers. The walks form a network of footpaths throughout the Pyrenees. After this first book I decided to write more guidebooks. This is my list of books that have been published:
In de ban van de Pyreneeën, een gids voor wandelaars (Under the spell of the Pyrenees, a walkers guide), published in 1997. This guide contains 26 trekkings in the high mountains of the Pyrenees. Many walks in the national parks but also trekkings in more remote corners of the Pyrenees. Practical information about the regions, places to stay, equipment, flora and fauna. Publisher: Gottmer. Wandelgids Franse Pyreneeën, het Parc National des Pyrénées Occidentales in 50 wandelingen (walking guide French Pyrenees, the Parc National des Pyrénées Occidentales in 50 walks), published in 1999. 50 interesting walks in and around the French national park. Some walks are easy, others are demanding. Practical information about the area, places to stay, mountainhuts, flora and fauna, equipment. Publisher: Elmar Wandelgids Franse Pyreneeën, de Centrale Pyreneeën in 50 wandelingen (walking guide French Pyrenees, the Central Pyrenees in 50 walks), published in 1999. 50 interesting walks in the area east of the national park: vallée de Campan, vallée d'Aure, the valleys of Louron and Luchon, Couserans, Haute-Ariège, vallée d'Orlu and the Carlit-region. Some walks are easy, others are demanding. Practical information about the regions, places to stay, mountainhuts, flora and fauna, equipment. Publisher: Elmar. Wandelgids Spaanse Pyreneeën, Aragon in 50 wandelingen (walking guide Spanish Pyrenees, Aragon in 50 walks): published in 2000. 50 interesting walks in the high mountains of Aragon: valle de Hecho, valle de Aragon, valle de Tena, valle de Ara, the Ordesa National Park, valle de Bielsa, valle de Gistain, valle de Benasque. Some walks are easy, others are demanding. The book contains the climbs of the three highest summits of the Pyrenees: Aneto (3404m), Posets (3375m), Monte Perdido (3355m). Practical information about the regions, places to stay, mountainhuts, flora and fauna, equipment. Publisher: Elmar. Wandelgids Spaanse Pyreneeën, Catalaanse Pyreneeën en Andorra in 50 wandelingen (walking guide Spanish Pyrenees, Catalonean Pyrenees and Andorra in 50 walks). Published in april 2001. 50 interesting walks in the valle de Barrabes, vall d'Aran, the Aigües Tortes National Park, valle de Cardos, vall Ferrera, Andorra, Cerdanya. Unfortunately all these books have been written in Dutch and they are only available in the Netherlands and Belgium. There is however one book that has been translated in English. The book Het grote Pyreneeënavontuur: Haute Randonnée Pyrénéenne, published in 2002, has been translated and was published in 2004 bij Cicerone Press. In fact its is more than just a translation, it’s also an update of the book. In my opinion (having walked the GR 10 and the GR 11 as well), the Pyrenean Haute Route (in French Haute Randonnée Pyrénéenne, HRP) is the most beautiful, spectacular and challenging walk in the Pyrenees. Unlike the GR 10 and GR 11 the Haute Route crosses the French-Spanish border many times, exploring both sides of the mountain range and staying as close as possible to the main ridge of the Pyrenees. As a result the Haute Route leads the trekker through landscapes of immense variety and impeccable beauty. My guide has been well received in the United Kingdom and the selling figures are good. I am very happy and proud to announce that Cicerone and I have decided to publish a second edition of the book. In order to make a book that is completely up to date, I will walk the Haute Route once more in 2008 and the second edition will be published in spring of 2009. It is a pity that the selling figures of the Dutch book are very disappointing. As a result this book will no longer be available in a few months and a second edition is out of the question.
